Overview

Somatropin is recombinant human growth hormone (rHGH), a 191-amino-acid polypeptide identical in sequence and structure to the growth hormone naturally produced by the human pituitary gland. Manufactured via recombinant DNA technology in E. coli or mammalian cell lines, somatropin provides exogenous GH directly rather than stimulating endogenous release like GHRH analogs or GHRPs. It is the most potent and direct GH-elevating compound available and is the gold standard for research into growth hormone effects on muscle, fat metabolism, recovery, and aging. Somatropin is the active ingredient in pharmaceutical products such as Genotropin, Humatrope, Norditropin, Saizen, and Omnitrope.

Mechanism of Action

Somatropin binds directly to growth hormone receptors (GHR) located on cells throughout the body, particularly in the liver, muscle, bone, and adipose tissue. Receptor binding triggers the JAK2/STAT5 signaling cascade, producing two major downstream effects: direct cellular actions on target tissues, and stimulation of IGF-1 production primarily in the liver. IGF-1 then mediates many of the anabolic and growth-promoting effects attributed to GH, including protein synthesis, cellular proliferation, and tissue repair. GH itself drives lipolysis (fat breakdown), increases hepatic glucose output, and supports collagen synthesis. Unlike GHRH analogs that work through the pituitary, somatropin bypasses the entire HPG axis and delivers a direct, dose-dependent GH signal — making it more potent but also more disruptive to natural feedback loops.
